Information for current and prospective donors to the Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach.
Each year, demand for our services increases — in 2013, we added three new sessions, bringing our weekly offerings from 13 to 16 classes. As one of only two PATH-certified centers in Orange County, TRCHB fills a critical gap for families struggling to find low-cost therapeutic riding services. To continue to meet increasing demand, TRCHB is seeking funding to purchase the following upgrades to our arena:
1. Sprinklers and gutters: A sprinkler system will help control dust throughout the arena. Properly maintained arenas require this addition to ensure adequate traction, proper footing, and a low-dust environment that is necessary for the safety of the horse, rider, and volunteers. A gutter system will surround the arena, and is required by the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center to protect the water quality of the surrounding residential area (Estimated costs $7,000).
2. Lighting: Currently, TRCHB’s classes are limited to daylight hours, and thus, are limited in availability, as school, work, or other therapies often prevent clients from attending day lessons. The addition of six lights to our arena will allow us to launch evening lessons, expanding our hours of operation and increasing the number of clients we are able to serve (Estimated costs $33,000).
3. New Horse Trailer: Currently, TRCHB is using donated storage space in the homes of our board members and volunteers, and lacks any meeting space at our arena. The purchase of a trailer for added office and meeting space will allow for parent meetings, continuing education, volunteer training, and professional development. This one-time investment will significantly increase our capacity to better serve volunteers and clients (Estimated costs $28,000).
4. City Permits: TRCHB is currently operating with a temporary use permit from the city of Huntington Beach, but is in the final stages of acquiring a 20-year conditional use permit (CUP), which will allow for a significantly longer lease and the important additions described in this proposal (Estimated costs $8,000).
