The Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach (TRC) was founded in 1990
by caring parents and relatives of young people with disabilities. With its
founding, many prominent Huntington Beach residents stepped forward.
By-laws, mission statements, board meetings and endless fundraising marked
the beginning of TRC.
Ms. Carole Ann Wall, formerly of the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce,
makes a lasting impact on the rise of TRC as a reputable non-profit organization.
TRC's motto is: "The spirit that overcomes disabilities", and visitors and clients of TRC can see this motto come to life everyday. Through the generous time, talents, and treasure of volunteers and sponsors, TRC has continued to grow.
Our students come to us from all over Orange County and beyond. Learning proper horse riding techniques our students are able to strengthen core muscles and muscles in their arms, legs and back. Although exercising these muscles can be painful for many of our students, strengthening these muscles provides our students with more flexibility and movement in performing everyday needs.
The thrill of being on a live 900 pound horse overcomes the dread of having to visit the gym. Instead, horses become a part of their lives which they look forward to each week. The calming effects of riding and the gentle spirit of a horse provide our students with fun while meeting the needs of their bodies and minds.
Our lessons are not a simple horsy ride. Rather, we use the techniques and strategies established by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH International), located, in Denver Colorado. As a member of PATH, TRC uses guidelines and support to create and sustain an effective and safe program which includes horsemanship, body positioning, steering, and problem solving opportunities.
In an effort to make our lesson even more enjoyable, we provide our students educational opportunities. Students must use their language and problem solving skills to respond to the questions and directions given by our instructors. Building self-esteem and confidence are also important benefits of TRC.
We are very proud of the great strides we have made over the years and look forward to continuing to meet the needs of those with special needs. We welcome you to visit TRC.
Sincerely,
Dave Quatman, TRC Board President
